Iztiraab

Here’s my second nazm… which I totally love!  No no, I’m so not “tooting” my own horn.. it really ended up being a nice nazm.  Iztiraab (which means “bechaini”) is the title of this nazm: iztiraab ======= aaj phir raat tirii yaad se bojhal guzri aaj phir chaaNd mire haal pe ghamgeen rahaa aaj phir [...]

hamaare darmiyaaN ab dooriyaaN haiN

My first nazm ever…. oh it was so much easier writing nazm than writing a Ghazal, it seems that the idea flows far better (at least in my case, that’s what happened) and the nazm just “happened” quickly, while I take my own sweet time when I write Ghazals.  Regardless, here’s my first nazm entitled: [...]

mire vaadoN ko gin_naa chhoR do tum

Here’s a Ghazal that I wrote about a year ago (before which I had taken a two year break from writing Urdu poetry), hence the Ghazal is nothing really great, though some couplets are nice, but its over-all very light-hearted and contains easy to understand language.. mire va’adoN ko gin_naa chhoR do tum muhabbat ko [...]

zaraa nigaah uThaao k kuchh qaraar aaye

Continuing with posting my own poetry (which is just a few Ghazals and Nazms that I wrote here and there), here’s another one of my proud creations. zaraa nigaah uThaao k kuchh qaraar aaye mai-e-nashaat pilaao k kuchh qaraar aaye vafaa kii sham’aa jalaao k kuchh qaraar aaye zaraa qareeb to aao k kuchh qaraar [...]

unki aaNkhoN se chhalak jaate haiN paimaane kaii

Here’s a ghazal that I also recited in a mushaira that took place in Montreal.  The Ghazal got a lot of applauds, thankfully and was well received by the audience there. 1. unkii aaNkhoN se chhalak jaate haiN paimaane ka’ii raat hii raat meiN ban jaate haiN afsaane ka’ii! 2. ik faqat terii hii dil_jo’ii [...]

hasrat-e-aashiqi! ham tiraa kya kareiN?

Another ghazal that I wrote while I was learning how to write technically sound Ghazals (though I have to say, I’m still learning!).  This one is yet again, a light-hearted Ghazal and was written on a misra-e-tarah posted on urdustan.net forums. 1. hasrat-e-aashiqii! ham tiraa kyaa kareiN? in sulagatii tamannaaoN kaa kyaa kareiN?? 2. ye [...]

ishq ki baazi kabhi hamse lagaa kar dekhiye

A light-hearted Ghazal written in 2003 as I was learning how to write technically sound Ghazals.  On Urdustan.net forums, a misra-e-tarah was given : “kitni vus’at hai hamaare dil meiN aa kar dekhiye”.  The following tarahi ghazal was my attempt: 1. ishq kii baazii kabhii ham se lagaa kar dekhiye dekhiye, ik baar to aaNkheiN [...]

raah-e-imaan ko laashoN se

My second Ghazal ended up being about an issue that really boggles my mind at all times. The Ghazal was written after the Muslim-Hindu riots in Gujarat and reflects my thoughts about this plague that affects our home countries and perhaps the whole world. raah-e-imaan ko laashoN se sajaate kyoN haiN? log “bhagwaan” ko “shaitaan” [...]

kis se poochheiN k maajra kyaa hai?

My first Urdu Ghazal, written in the same meter as Ghalib’s favourite ghazal ‘dil-e-naadaaN tujhe huaa kya hai’. As a matter of fact, the Ghazal is written in the same ‘zameen’, meaning the same ‘radeef’ and the same ‘qaafiya’. I intend on posting articles on my blog in my own words about my understanding of [...]

Vie

This was my first French poem ever, written on 07/May/1992, sitting in a french class while looking at a really pretty “Quebecoise”…. Considering I was writing a poem in French while the teacher was talking makes it ok, at least I was doing something to improve my French. Here ya go: Les cheveux comme les [...]
