Some ash’aar by Munawwar Rana
siyaasi aadmi ki shakl to pyaari nikaltii hai
magar jab guftagoo karta hai chingaari nikaltii hai
laboN par muskuraahaT dil meiN bezaari nikalti hai
baRe logoN meiN hi aksar ye beemaari nikalti hai
——
balandi der tak kis shaKhs ke hisse meiN rahtii hai
bahut uuNchii imaarat har ghaRi Khatre meiN rahtii hai
bahut jee chaahtaa hai qaid-e-jaaN se ham nikal jaayeiN
tumhaari yaad bhii lekin isi malbe meiN rahtii hai
ye aisaa qarz hai jo maiN adaa kar hi nahiiN saktaa

Dec 15, 2006 My Urdu Poems, Poetry
My first Urdu Ghazal, written in the same meter as Ghalib’s favourite ghazal ‘dil-e-naadaaN tujhe huaa kya hai’. As a matter of fact, the Ghazal is written in the same ‘zameen’, meaning the same ‘radeef’ and the same ‘qaafiya’. I intend on posting articles on my blog in my own words about my understanding of these concepts in Urdu poetry as a lot of my friends always ask me for guidance when it comes to writing in meters. For now, enjoy the Ghazal, which I think, for a first one, was not so bad.
kis se poocheiN k maajaraa kyaa hai?
ye sanam kyaa hai? ye Khudaa kyaa hai?
maiN to aashiq huuN mujh ko kyaa ma’aloom!
ye fanaa kyaa hai? ye baqaa kyaa hai?
[fanaa = mortality, baqaa = immortality]
bas tira Gham hii zindagii merii!
aur duniyaa se vaastaa kyaa hai?
maiN tiraa dost bhii, pujaarii bhii!
aa mire dil meiN! sochtaa kyaa hai?!?
chaNd lamhe haiN aakhir-e-shab ko
zikr-e-waslat meiN yuuN rakkhaa kyaa hai?
[aakhir-e-shab = the end of night, zikr-e-waslat = talk about meeting]
bevafaa! tujh se kyaa shikaayat ho?
zeest ne bhii mujhe diyaa kyaa hai??
[zeest = life]
raaz-e-hastii sa ban gayaa huuN maiN
merii aaNkhoN meiN DhuuNDataa kyaa hai?
[raaz-e-hastii = existence's secret]
dekh “tanhaa” ko kaise phirtaa hai!
kaun jaane use huaa kyaa hai??

Vie
Dec 15, 2006 My French Poems, Poetry
This was my first French poem ever, written on 07/May/1992, sitting in a french class while looking at a really pretty “Quebecoise”…. Considering I was writing a poem in French while the teacher was talking makes it ok, at least I was doing something to improve my French. Here ya go:

Toi
Dec 15, 2006 My French Poems, Poetry
My second French poem, written while sitting in the college cafeteria in September 1993… what else there is to do when you are sitting in the cafeteria right?
Toi

Sang
Dec 15, 2006 My French Poems, Poetry
I figured, while I’m just filling up my blog with stuff, let’s post more of my old French poems, they do need a place! So here’s another poem that differed greatly from my normal style of writing, which usually includes love poems. The poem was written on 13/Sep/1994, during my college days. Sang (blood) was a good metaphor to be used for such a subject.
Sang
Sang. Sang qui circule
Dans mes veine bleus
Sang. Sang qui coule
Comme les larmes de mes yeux
Une lame du couteau
foncée dans mon ventre
rouge foncé, pas de l’eau
qui s’échappe et non rentre
Sang. Sang, oui je le vois
Qui est présent partout
partout autour de moi!
Sang. Qui me plais, surtout!!
Non, non! ne me toucher pas!
Laissez le sang sortir de là!
car cela me donne la sensation
que je n’ai pas de couleur
ni de nation!!

Questions
Dec 14, 2006 My French Poems, Poetry
This poem was written in 1994. The poem represents some of the questions my mind still can’t find any answers to. However, the search is on. I stopped writing French poetry in 1995 and this, according to me, is one of the best poems I wrote. Although, I’m being extremely subjective in my assessment and I’m certain that anybody with any knowledge of French poetry will say, what a load of “crap”, but hey, I can’t help but like it. Anyway, entitled “Questions”, here’s the poem:
Notes:
*Homo néandertalis : It is supposed that when the neandarthal acquired consciousness and became aware of death, he thought about life after death and invented the aspect of “double” or spirit. Evidence exists that the Neanderthal used to bury their dead along with materials to help their dead carry on their new journey.
**A reference is being made to the concept of Big Bang at this point and the fact that universe started with an explosion of an infinitely dense point. The universe is currently in expansion according to the widely accepted theory of Big Bang
***“To think is to exist” – (Je pense donc je suis – Descartes)
****Fedor Mikhailovitch Dostoievski (or Fyodor Dostoyevsky), a russian philosopher. he said: “If God doesn’t exist, there is nothing that can be termed immoral!”
***** The theory of “Existensialism” by Jean Paul Sartre, a French philosopher
